What is Reiki?
Reiki was developed in Japan as an energy healing technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It can be administered by touch (laying on hands) or hovering the hands over the body. It can also be administered by distance healing. Reiki is based on the idea that an unseen energy often called chi or ki flows through our bodies and is what causes us to be alive. If a person’s chi is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we feel happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki actually translates to “spiritually guided life force energy.” 1
There are many different reiki traditions and the one which I learned is Reiki Tummo. One of the most widely known traditions is the Usui tradition given it is the founding tradition for reiki, which was developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui.
Read here about how Reiki Tummo is different.
