Continuing the discussion on the four clairs, today we are focusing on clairaudience. Clairaudience is being able to hear your spirit guides giving you guidance, and being able to hear spirits talk. Your spirit guides by the way can be angels, spirit animals, ascended masters, or even your loved ones that have already passed. As I mentioned in the Clairvoyance post, in the Ghost Whisperer tv show the main character is able to hear the ghosts when they speak to her. That’s an example of clairaudience. Some have also reported hearing music when there isn’t any playing, or ringing in the ears is sometimes spiritually attributed to getting a “download” or message from your guides. But be sure to also rule out tinnitus by visiting your family doctor. Here’s an example of clairaudience I saw in a video by Vishen Lakhiani, the founder of Mindvalley. He mentions one day when he was driving on a highway and wasn’t paying particular attention. He suddenly heard a voice that told him to pay attention so he brought his attention back to the road. As he did he narrowly avoided being in car accident as the cars in front of him collided.
Here are some ways to build up your clairaudience skills. Before you begin any of these practices make sure your mind and body are clear and centered. Ask that you be helped, guided and protected. Set an intention for your practice. Finally, find a space that is calm and where you won’t be interrupted.
- Meditation
If you are not a regular meditator and wish to build your psychic abilities, meditation is a great way to start. When you are calm and clear you can allow the space for spiritual guidance to come in. Here’s a simple meditation to try. Set your timer for however many minutes you want to spend. If you are a beginner try 10 minutes to start. You can increase your time as you become more practiced in meditation. Sit down, close your eyes, and imagine you are standing tall like a tree with your feet in the soil. Then imagine that mother earth’s energy is grounding you. Ask your spirit guides, or angels to come to you. When you feel they have arrived, ask them any questions you want to ask and listen for their answer. You may hear them speak in your ears, or you may hear them as a voice in your mind. You may even have their words pop into your mind. Thank your spirit guides for speaking to you. Then when you are ready, open your eyes. Take time after the meditation to absorb the experience. Record the experience however you like. Some people like to write in their journal, while others like to record an audio or video even if it’s just for their own records. - Practice physically hearing
This one can be practiced on your own. Listen to recordings of common sounds like raindrops, . Then turn off the recording and see if you can still hear it in your mind. You can also do this with songs which can be quite fun if you’re a singer or musician. I’m a singer and this is one way I learn a song. I listen to the song while I have the lyrics in front of me. Then I will try to sing the song after hearing it only once. I can mostly get 90% of it correct. Then I go back and listen to the parts I got wrong. I keep repeating this until I can “hear” the song in my mind without listening to the recording. Once I got it I can then put my own spin on the song to make it my own. - Listen closely
You can practice increasing your clairaudience also by listening to people or animals when you are talking to them.- With a person
Ask a friend to partner with you in this exercise. You’ll start a normal conversation & then ask them to intentionally think a certain phrase that you don’t know. See if you can hear that phrase which they are thinking. Verify with your friend if you got any part of their message correct. Don’t worry if you’re not right the first time. It can take some time to hear anything. Sometimes you might get a sense of the words but not actual words. Write down any messages and take time to think about the experience. Clairaudience can sometimes cross with clairsentience (clear feeling) or claircognizance (clear knowing). More on these clairs in upcoming posts. It’s also possible that you may be stronger in the other clairs than clairaudience. - With an animal
If you have a pet you can also try hearing their messages or thoughts. This is called animal communication. If you don’t have a pet, ask a friend if you can try talking to their pet, or find an animal in your backyard or park that you can talk to. Be calm and grounded before you talk to an animal. Also make sure the animal is calm when you attempt to talk to them. You don’t have to touch them or be very close to them. Just be near enough to see them and for them to see you. Firstly, ask them if you can speak to them. You may feel or “hear” their answer yes or no. Hopefully it will be yes. If it’s not a yes try again later. When the animal gives you a yes, ask them if they have anything they want to say to you. Listen closely. What message are you getting from them? Animals don’t always speak in words, after all they never went to school and learned English like we did! They might give you images or feelings that you will then have to interpret. When they have finished “speaking” ask them if there’s anything else they want to tell you. If there’s nothing else they want to say thank them for talking with you. Write down any messages they have given you.
- By yourself
You can also practice listening to your inner voice by sifting through what are your thoughts versus your soul speaking. For example, your mind might be thinking: Oh I never get this right. But your soul might say: Maybe I can try something different instead. The voice of your soul is positive and gentle. It may be very quiet if you’ve usually suppressed your feelings, thoughts, desires, and hopes. But with practice you can get it to speak louder. One tool I like to use to hear my inner voice is The Right Questions by Debbie Ford. This tool is especially useful when I have a decision I want to make. Below are the 10 questions. After each question listen to your inner voice and see what comes up. Are your thoughts interrupting? Can you tell the difference between your thoughts and your inner voice? The Rights Questions, Debbie Ford-
- Will this choice propel me toward an inspiring future or will it keep me stuck in the past?
- Will this choice bring me long-term fulfillment or will it bring me short-term gratification?
- Am I standing in my power or am I trying to please another?
- Am I looking for what’s right or am I looking for what’s wrong?
- Will this choice add to my life force or will it rob me of my energy?
- Will I use this situation as a catalyst to grow and evolve or will I use it to beat myself up?
- Does this choice empower me or does it disempower me?
- Is this an act of self-love or is it an act of self-sabotage?
- Is this an act of faith or is it an act of fear?
- Am I choosing from my divinity or am I choosing from my humanity?

Practicing any of the psychic skills can be intimidating if you previously had negative connotations to clairaudience, clairvoyance or any psychic skills. The four clairs are just another tool that you can choose to use or not use. My thinking is, why not hone all your skills if possible? You never know what can come in handy. We aren’t just physical beings, we are also connected to the divine or the universe’s energy. Sometimes the four clairs can seem like a figment of imagination. However there are true psychics and clairvoyants. How to tell who is authentic? Most people can usually tell if they are being lied to. Go with your gut and common sense. If you doubt that you can be objective ask a friend to come with you who has more experience in the spiritual studies or someone whose gut you trust.
Just remember that practicing your psychic skills is a journey and it doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient. You may find as you practice the four clairs that some of them will come more naturally and quickly to you. I wish you fun in your spiritual journey!
