The Crown Chakra

crown-2533113_640

Chakra image from Peter Lomas at Pixabay

Colour: Violet

Location: Top or crown of the head

Mantra: Om

Relates to: Higher consciousness, Enlightenment, Inspiration, Connection to the Universe

Today we’re talking about the crown chakra. The seventh chakra in the chakra system is about higher consciousness, enlightenment, inspiration, and connection to the divine or the universe. Physically, the crown chakra is linked to the head and brain. The vowel sound for the crown chakra is Ee  (like me ).

Underactive = lacking in energy
Overactive = has too much energy

If your crown chakra is underactive you will be feeling misunderstood, lonely, constantly worrying, unable to connect with others, apathetic, like your life doesn’t have purpose and disconnected to your spirituality. If your crown chakra is overactive you’ll be addicted to spirituality, egotistic, crave attention, have a need to be popular, and be mentally confused.

Someone with a balanced crown chakra is joyful, wise, peaceful, compassionate, feels inspired, connected to their higher self, their spiritual side, to everyone and to nature. This is a person who has faith, and spiritual beliefs but doesn’t go overboard with them. They may also radiate a sense of serenity and peace.

If you feel your crown chakra is under or overactive and want to heal it, here are some ways to do so. Pick whatever resonates with you. If you’re not sure what you’ll like, try it and see if you do. Move on to the next thing if it doesn’t work for you.

  • Chant the mantra: Om. You can do this with background music, or into silence. You can do this in as little as 1 minute if you’re pressed for time.
  • Do some yoga postures: Mountain pose, tree pose and forward fold are some yoga poses for the crown chakra. Here is an article with illustrations on the posesBrett Larkin also has a video for crown chakra yoga.
  • Meditate. Meditation not only clears your mind of mental garbage but it also connects you to the divine, whatever your beliefs are. There are so many different ways of meditating. Prayer is a form of meditation. Tai chi is a moving meditation. Pick one that you appeals to you. You may want to explore the different forms of meditation if you’re really curious. I like the insight timer app as there are many meditations you can access there for free. Colette Baron-Reid has an interesting crown chakra video on YouTube.
  • Reduce clutter. Believe it or not, clearing your clutter can help clear your mind. Too much clutter overstimulates your brain. By keeping your brain as clear as possible you’ll be able to access that connection to the divine. Read this 2011 study by Princeton University Neuroscience Institute for the scientific explanation.
  • Use a solfeggio frequencies. The solfeggio frequency for the crown chakra is 963 Hz. Here’s a video for a solfeggio crown chakra meditation. I found this one very soothing. Find one that you like if this one isn’t to your taste.
  • Use crystals.  Selenite, labradorite, and amethyst are all crystals good for the crown chakra. You can carry them with you, wear them in jewelry, or meditate with them.
  • Try some energy work. There are some types of energy work you can do yourself such as qigong, yoga, acupressure, and EFT (also called tapping).  For other energy work like reiki, reflexoloy, and acupuncture you may want to book an appointment with a practitioner.
  • Look for synchronicities. One way to open up your crown chakra is to become aware of synchronicities, also called signs. I had a synchronicity happen recently where someone called me to ask if I’d like to take part in her project. Funny thing is, I was thinking of doing a similar project. I took that as a sign that I was meant to be a part of her project. Also pay attention to cledons. A cledon is when a message is given to you by someone or something else. Colette Baron-Reid explains in her article here.
  • Explore what spirituality means to you. Spirituality is a person’s individual approach to connecting to the divine. This can go hand in hand with your religious practice if you have one. You can have your own individual spiritual practice while going to church as well. So what does spirituality mean to you? If you’re an atheist (not believing in god or gods) it might mean having faith in the general goodness of humanity. Whatever your beliefs are, explore what you’re curious about. You can read books, listen to podcasts, watch videos or documentaries, take self-development courses, etc. Tailor your exploration to the time you want to spend on this and what draws you.
  • Create your own spiritual practice. Having your own spiritual practice can really open up your crown chakra and keep it’s energies clear. Your spiritual practice can be unique to you. My personal practice is based on the things I’ve learned. Every morning after exercising I will do yoga, clear my lymphatic points (acupressure), clear my energy meridians (energy work), do some affirmations and do some meditation. I also like to give thanks for every meal I eat. What do you like to do? I have a friend who is Hindu that does puja (prayer) every day.
  • Wear the colour violet or have it around you in your home where you can see it easily.
  • Use affirmations. Create your own or use one of these affirmations below.
I am connected to the divine.
My spirit guides and angels are supporting me.
I am open to signs from the universe.

I hope this article has given you some insight into the crown chakra and tools to heal it. Did you try any of the tools above? I’d love to know! Please comment below.

The Third Eye Chakra

Chakra image from Peter Lomas at Pixabay

Colour: Indigo

Location: Between your eyebrows

Mantra: Sham

Relates to: Intuition, Insight, Psychic Awareness, Wisdom, Thought, Morality

Today we’re talking about the third eye chakra. The sixth chakra in the chakra system is about intuition, insight, psychic awareness, wisdom, thought, morality, inspiration, creativity, and vision. Physically, the third eye chakra is linked to the pineal gland which is in charge of the body’s biorhythms. The vowel sound for the third eye chakra is Aa (like say).

Underactive = lacking in energy
Overactive = has too much energy

If your third eye chakra is underactive you’ll feel like you can’t see the bigger picture, will be easily influenced, confused about your life purpose, lack clarity in your life, frequently day dream to avoid reality, and doubt yourself. If your third eye chakra is overactive you’ll be narrow-minded, arrogant, egotistical, opinionated, stubborn, don’t trust people, can’t connect to your higher self, materialistic, overly logical and uninspired.

Someone with a balanced third eye chakra is intuitive, charismatic, knows their purpose in life, has insight, emotional awareness, is seen as wise, and has clarity in their life. They may also be in tune with their psychic abilities (clairvoyance, etc). Have you ever met someone who seems to know how you’re feeling even if you’re trying to hide it? Or do you know someone who is in tune with their intuition and it has saved them from unpleasant experiences? Those people are the ones with a balanced third eye chakra.

If you feel your third eye chakra is under or overactive and want to heal it, here are some ways to do so. Pick whatever resonates with you. If you’re not sure that you like it, try it and see if you do. Move on to the next thing if it doesn’t work for you.

  • Chant the mantra: Sham. Or the vowel sound Aa (like say). You can do this with background music, or into silence. Do this for at least 3 minutes if you’re pressed for time.
  • Do some yoga postures. Forward bend, child’s pose, and dolphin pose are great yoga postures for the third eye chakra. Here is a 15 minute video on third eye yoga postures.
  • Practice mindfulness. If you’re the type that loves to day dream and get lost in your day dreams, practicing mindfulness will help you. By grounding yourself in the present moment you bring yourself back to reality. Doing simple breathwork is a good start. One easy breath meditation is breathing in for 5 seconds, holding for 5 seconds then exhaling for 5 seconds. You can do this several times and really focus on the actions of your body and how it feels as you do the breathing.
  • Use a solfeggio frequencies. The solfeggio frequency for the third eye chakra is 852 Hz. Here is a solfeggio meditation on YouTube for the third eye chakra.
  • Use crystals.  shungite, sapphire, lapis lazuli and amethyst are all crystals good for the third eye chakra. You can carry them with you, wear them in jewelry, or meditate with them.
  • Do self-reflection. By doing self-reflection you can increase your self-awareness. One technique is using a journal. Look at why you behave the way you do and why you believe what you do.
  • Look at your dreams. Your dreams are full of subconscious and symbolic  messages about your desires, needs and fears. If you practice remembering your dreams and writing them down you could gain valuable insight into your subconscious. Keep a journal near your bedside so when you wake up you can write the details of your dream down.
  • Practice your psychic abilities. There are several psychic abilities people can have. The most commonly known are clairvoyance (clear vision), clairaudience (clear hearing), claircognizance (clear knowing), clairsentience (clear feeling).  For example, to practice claircognizance when the phone rings see if you can sense who is calling you without looking at the caller id. For clairvoyance you could practice seeing your aura or other peoples auras. There are many ways to practice your psychic abilities. Some people wouldn’t event call these psychic abilities. Everyone has some psychic ability by the way. If you’ve been raised to ignore yours, it may just take time and practice to get in touch with them again.
  • Wear the colour indigo or have it around you in your home where you can see it easily.
  • Use affirmations. Create your own or use one of these affirmations below.
I trust my intuition.
My intuition guides me to my highest good.
I am connected to the wisdom of the universe.
I know my life’s purpose.

I hope this article has given you some insight into the third eye chakra and tools to heal it. Did you try any of the tools above? I’d love to know! Please comment below.

The Throat Chakra

Chakra image from Peter Lomas at Pixabay

Colour: Blue

Location: Throat

Mantra: Ham

Relates to: Communication, Creativity, Free Will, Speech

Today we’re talking about the throat chakra. The fifth chakra in the chakra system is about communication, creativity, free will, and speech. Physically, the throat chakra is linked to the throat and neck. The vowel sound for the throat chakra is eye (like my). The throat chakra is the link between emotions and reason.

Underactive = lacking in energy
Overactive = has too much energy

If your throat chakra is underactive you will likely be unable to express yourself, feel ignored or misunderstood, fear speaking in public, is timid, dependent on others, not able to realize your ideas, may have poor social skills, and not able to express their creative side. If your throat chakra is overactive you’ll talk too much, be overly opinionated, bore others, criticize others and be stubborn.

Someone with a balanced throat chakra is able to be vulnerable with others, can express themselves, are honest, creative, show leadership skills, and have a variety of interests. These people are com

If you feel your throat chakra is under or overactive and want to heal it, here are some ways to do so. Pick whatever resonates with you. If you’re not sure that you like it, try it and see if you do. Move on to the next thing if it doesn’t work for you.

  • Chant the mantra: Ham. You can do this with background music, or into silence. Do this for at least 3 minutes if you’re pressed for time.
  • Do some yoga postures.  Plow pose, Fish pose, camel and cobra are good yoga postures for the throat chakra. Take a look at the pictures on Chakra Anatomy for more details.
  • Do a gratitude practice. When we are thankful for the things in our lives all of our chakras expand, especially our throat chakra. You can even do this gratitude practice like an prayer if that calls to you. For example, Thank you God / Universe/ Your Chosen Deity for this food on my plate, the roof over my head, the clothes that I wear. Or do it like an affirmation: thank you for all the abundance in my life.
  • Use a solfeggio frequencies. The solfeggio frequency for the throat chakra is 741 Hz. I found this one on YouTube that you may like. There are many throat chakra meditations on the insight timer app (my favourite meditation app)  as well.
  • Use crystals.  Aquamarine, blue topaz, turquoise, and lapis lazuli
are all crystals good for the throat chakra. You can carry them with you, wear them in jewelry, or meditate with them.
  • Look up at the blue sky above you. There’s nothing so comforting as looking at a blue sky in the summertime. Even in the winter it’s refreshing to look at the blue sky. The expansiveness of the sky and the feeling of openness can also help your throat chakra open.
  • Express your feelings and ideas. You can do this by talking to your friends, family, co-workers. You could also do journaling, write poetry, or do a video. If you’re feeling emotion well up and want to release it you can also scream, laugh or do whatever you feel drawn to do. Just make sure the people around you know what you’re doing so they don’t think you’ve gone crazy. LOL.
  • Practice your communication skills. There are so many ways to do to practice your communication skills. Many cities have a toastmaster’s group where you can practice giving a presentation in front of the other members. You could also do an improv class.
  • Spend time in meditation or in silence listening to your inner voice. Those with underactive throat chakras may experience their inner voice is so quiet that they often can’t hear it. In that case you want to “turn up the volume” of your inner voice or intuition so you can hear it better and follow it’s guidance. Those with overactive throat chakras may have a very loud inner voice that shouts or yells. Turning it down can support looking at the subtleties of your emotions or communications with others.
  • Practice being assertive or listen more carefully. If you usually give way to what other people want when they voice their opinions, then practice saying no. Check in with yourself and if the true answer is no then say no. If you’re the kind of person who talks a lot, practice listening more closely.
  • Wear the colour blue or have it around you in your home where you can see it easily.
  • Use affirmations. Create your own or use one of these affirmations below.
I am creative and I can express myself.
I am open to sharing myself authentically with others.

I speak kindly and with truth.
I communicate effectively and eloquently.

I hope this article has given you some insight into the throat chakra and tools to heal it. Did you try any of the tools above? I’d love to know! Please comment below.

The Heart chakra

heart-2533104_640

[Chakra image from Peter Lomas at Pixabay]

Colour: Green

Location: Center of your chest

Mantra: Yam

Relates to: Love, Forgiveness, Empathy, Partnership, Expression of Feelings

Today we’re talking about the heart chakra. The fourth chakra in the chakra system is about your ability to love, forgive, empathize, express your feelings and partnering with others. Physically, the heart chakra is linked to the heart, lungs, and thymus gland. The vowel sound for the heart chakra is Aw (like saw).

Underactive = lacking in energy
Overactive = has too much energy

If your heart chakra is underactive you will likely be feeling unloved, self-pity, have a fear of rejection, be needy, clingy, and uncertain. If your heart chakra is overactive you’ll act with a sense of entitlement, jealousy, blaming others and giving too much.

Someone with a balanced heart chakra radiates love, is loving, empathetic, compassionate, altruistic, and has good vibe that is contagious. When you’re around someone like this you just feel good.

If you feel your heart chakra is under or overactive and want to heal it, here are some ways to do so. Pick whatever resonates with you. If you’re not sure that you like it, try it and see if you do. Move on to the next thing if it doesn’t work for you.

  • Chant the mantra: Yam. You can do this with background music, or into silence. Do this for at least 3 minutes if you’re pressed for time.
  • Do some yoga postures for the heart chakra like: bridge, camel pose and wheel.  An illustration of the poses can be found on this website. Modify the poses if you want or need to. I can’t do camel because of arthritis in my knees so the way I would modify this is to get a chair with strong arms. I would stand in front of it with my arms behind me supported on the arms of the chair. And then I would extend my chest upwards as I lean back. You could also do a standing back bend which isn’t as extreme as modified camel but still opens up your chest area where the heart chakra is located.
  • Do acts of love. Let’s face it. We live in a world where we’re usually taught only to give if we get something back. To open your heart chakra more do some kind of action where you don’t expect anything back. It can range from something small to something big. For example, if you’re out and see something that a friend would like, and you buy it for them just because you know they might enjoy it. Another example is, you could help an elderly neighbour get groceries, or sit and talk with them if you think they might be lonely. Random acts of kindness is an act of love, especially if the recipient doesn’t know who you are. Now that’s really giving unconditional love!
  • Use a solfeggio heart chakra meditation. The solfeggio frequency for the heart chakra is 341.3 Hz. Here is a meditation you cant try from YouTube which uses a Tibetan Singing Bowl. There are many solfeggio meditations online for free. Do a search on YouTube or your chosen search engine to find some.
  • Use crystals:  Rose quartz, Emerald, Green Jade, & Green Aventurine are all crystals good for the heart chakra. Rose quartz although it isn’t green, is known as the crystal of unconditional love and it’s vibration resonates with the heart chakra. You can carry them with you, wear them in jewelry, or meditate with them.
  • Do breathwork. One technique to open your heart chakra is doing alternate nostril breathing. Yogis will be familiar with this type of breathwork. You can find instructions here. Another simpler breathing technique is to put your hand on your heart and breathe in to a count of 5, hold for a count of 5 and exhale to a count of five. When you have your hand on your heart focus on how your heart is feeling.
  • Express your feelings. When I want to express myself I sing. If I want to open my heart chakra I sing my favourite songs that have the topic of love. What do you do to express yourself?
  • Do what you love. Most of us don’t take time to do what we love. I love to sing, paint, and write. When I get too practical and only focus on what I have to do my life becomes tedious. Doing what I love brings joy back into my life. When I’m happy I’m more open to giving love to others and to being loved in return.
  • Take time to laugh. As adults we’re often so serious! But we don’t need to be this way all the time. Take time to laugh. Watch your favourite move or tv show that makes you laugh. You could also try laughter yoga.
  • Practice Forgiveness. Forgiving someone doesn’t mean forgetting or saying what they did is okay. In some cases people can do truly horrible things. Forgiveness means letting yourself release the emotions that were a part of your reaction to an event or circumstance. Do you really want to carry that baggage with you the rest of your life? Usually the only person who suffers is the one who is unwilling to forgive. When you forgive you say that I’m not willing to suffer anymore for what happened.
  • Volunteer your time. Creating an impact on your community is a way to show your love for your community. When people see you giving back to the community it shows that you care. You can volunteer your time at many places. An example of some are: Homeless shelters, the hospital, a senior’s home, in the office of a charity, and at charity events. I’m probably forgetting some, but you get the idea.
  • Wear the colour green or have it around you in your home where you can see it easily.
  • Use affirmations. Create your own or use one of these affirmations:
    • I love and accept myself completely.
    • I am loved and supported.
    • I am grateful.
    • I am open to loving others and to be loved.

The Solar Plexus Chakra

solar-2533097_640

[Chakra image from Peter Lomas at Pixabay]

Colour: Yellow

Location: 2-3 inches above your belly button

Mantra: Ram

Relates to: Inner Strength, Self-Esteem, Responsibility, Work

Today we’re talking about the solar plexus chakra. The third chakra in the chakra system is about your inner strength, self-esteem, responsibility, and work. Physically, the solar plexus chakra is related to the stomach, kidneys, liver, and adrenal glands.

Underactive = lacking in energy
Overactive = has too much energy

If your solar plexus chakra is underactive then you may have low self-esteem, be in a victim mindset, look for approval from others, procrastinate, be irresponsible, and have a lack of ambition.  If your solar plexus chakra is overactive you may be judgemental, controlling, stubborn, critical, and bullying.

Someone with a balanced solar plexus chakra has respect for themselves and others, is confident, responsible, outgoing, independent, calm, and acts with integrity. With a balanced solar plexus chakra you use your power to affect the world in a good way, are assertive and don’t need validation from others all the time.

If you want to heal your solar plexus chakra here are some ways to do so. Pick whatever resonates with you. If you’re not sure that you like it, try it and see if you do. Move on to the next thing if it doesn’t work for you.

  • Chant the mantra: Ram
  • Step out of your comfort zone. Try something different like changing your routines. Walk a different way home. Or learn something you’d never thought of. I never thought I’d be able to run a charity fundraiser. But with a team of people I was able to hold a successful one before covid hit.
  • Do some yoga postures for the solar plexus chakra like: boat pose, and reverse plank. Yogi Approved has an illustration of these poses here.
  • Be decisive. If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t make a move without getting advice from others, practice self-reliance. To do this you can make some decisions on your own without seeking advice. Do this within reason. Obviously you may want advice for things like where to put your investments. But don’t be swayed only by what the experts say. Let your own sense of what’s important to you also make the decision.
  • Do a solar plexus chakra  meditation. The solfeggio frequency for the solar plexus chakra is 528 Hz. Here is a meditation you can try from YouTube. There are many solfeggio meditations online for free. So just find one that appeals to you and try it out.
  • Use crystals:  Citrine, tiger’s eye, yellow calcite, and yellow tourmaline are all crystals good for the solar plexus chakra. You can carry them with you, wear them in jewelry, or meditate with them.
  • Speak up. If you have something to say, don’t hold it in for fear of others reactions. Remember, you can’t control how people react. They choose how to react to what you say. In a group setting like a work meeting, speak up if you have ideas, questions or comments.
  • Practice self-care. Self-care ranges from physical, spiritual, emotional and intellectual. We’ll list some examples of each. Physical self-care can consist of: eating healthy, doing exercise or movement, getting a massage or doing self-massage. Spiritual self-care: meditation, noticing the beautiful things in life. Emotional self-care: If you don’t feel like doing something respect that and say no. Or make a conditional offer like: “I can do this at this time but not right now. Does that work for you?” Intellectual self-care: Learn new things that you’re interested in no matter what anyone says. As long as you aren’t hurting any being or the environment.
  • Use affirmations. Create your own or use one of these affirmations:
    • I trust my intuition and follow its guidance.
    • I am confident and powerful.
    • The only approval I need is my own.
    • What I offer the world is valuable.
  • Wear the colour yellow or have it around you in your home where you can see it easily.

I hope this article has given you some insight into the solar plexus chakra and tools to heal your chakra. Did you try any of the tools above? I’d love to know! Please comment below.

The Sacral Chakra

sacral-2533094_640

Chakra Image from Peter Lomas at Pixabay

Colour: Orange

Location: Pelvic area, a couple of inches below your belly button

Mantra: Vam

Relates to: Money, Relationships,  Sexuality, Intimacy, Creativity

Today we’re talking about the sacral chakra (also called the sex chakra because of the proximity to the genitals). The second chakra in the chakra system is about creativity, money, relationships, sexuality and intimacy. Once your foundational needs are met in the root chakra the next question is often: what do I want to create? How do I want to feel? Going back to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the sacral chakra is level three. See picture below.

maslow

Underactive = lacking in energy
Overactive = has too much energy

If your sacral chakra is underactive then you may feel negative emotions, sluggish, lost, creatively blocked, afraid to interact, and overly concerned about what others think of you.  If your sacral chakra is overactive you may behave manipulatively, aggressively, show lack of emotional stability and be addicted to things that give you pleasure.

Someone with a balanced sacral chakra is friendly, passionate, playful, energetic, embraces change, and expresses themselves sexually in a healthy way.

If you want to heal your sacral chakra here are some ways to do so. Pick whatever you’re drawn to. If you’re not sure that you’ll like it, be open to trying it and see if you do. Move on to the next thing if it doesn’t work for you.

  • Chant the mantra: Vam
  • Release your emotions in a safe place. If you feel like crying do so. Scream, jump up and down. I once heard an author say: Get a plastic or sponge bat and beat the heck out of a pillow. Do whatever your body and emotions are aching to do but you never gave yourself permission to do so before. As long as you don’t hurt any being this is a safe way to release your emotions.
  • Do some yoga postures for the sacral chakra like: hip openers, and cat cow. Brett Larkin’s website shows how to do these yoga positions.
  • Explore your sexuality. Whether or not you have a partner there are ways to explore your sexuality. Read books on what you’re curious about. Learning to harness your tantric energy doesn’t have to involve sex. If you have a partner ask them if you can try something different when in bed. If you’re single, do something that makes you feel sexy. Put on some music, light some candles, and dance in a sensual way. This is all about expressing your sensuality and sexuality.
  • Do something creative like writing, drawing, painting, singing, etc. You know how kids play with making art in school? Come to this with the same attitude of playtime and don’t expect perfection right away. Your skills will come in time if you choose to practice them.
  • Do a sacral chakra meditation. There are many options on various sources like on YouTube, or apps like Insight Timer. Brett Larkin also has a sacral chakra meditation on YouTube.
  • Use crystals: carnelian, tiger’s eye, orange calcite, sunstone, amber, and tangerine quartz. You can carry them with you or meditate with them. You can also get jewelry with these crystals.
  • Take care of your body. Most of us are pretty rough with our bodies. Sometimes we don’t get enough rest, eat well or give it breaks like a walk in fresh air. What can you do to take care of yourself? Take a nap, give yourself an oil massage, stretch out your body if its tight, these are just some ideas.
  • Wear the colour orange or have it around you in your home. Some place where you can see it easily.
  • Look at your addictions. Are you addicted to sweet foods? Sex? Gambling? Alcohol? Take time to look at these addictions deeply. What is at the root of them? Are they filling in for something that you feel is lacking? You can journal about this, talk to a friend, a therapist or family member that you trust.
  • Use affirmations. Create your own or use one of these affirmations:
    • I allow myself to feel my emotions.
    • I am a passionate person.
    • I take care of and respect my body.
    • I have healthy boundaries.

The Root Chakra

[Chakra Image from Peter Lomas at Pixabay]

Colour: Red

Location: Base of Spine

Mantra: Lam

Relates to: Survival, Security, Safety, Belonging

Continuing with our discussion on the chakra system, today we’ll be talking about the root chakra. As the first chakra in the chakra system, the root chakra is our foundation. If you think of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the root chakra would be the first two levels. I find it interesting that most diagrams of the hierarchy of needs actually follow the colours of the chakra system. See picturebelow.

Underactive = lacking in energy
Overactive = has too much energy

If your root chakra is underactive then you may feel unloved, mistrustful, disconnected from the world, anxious, ungrounded, indecisive, have a negative mindset, and is overly concerned with what others think of you. If your root chakra is overactive you may act bossy, controlling, domineering, egotistic, greedy, materialistic, impulsive and have workaholic tendencies.

Someone with a balanced root chakra is grounded, trusting, independent, feels secure and at peace with their life. If you’re empathic you may sense that they are trust worthy, steady, solid, and reliable.

If you want to heal your root chakra here are some ways to do so. Pick whatever resonates with you. If you’re not sure that you like it, experiment and see if you do. Take this as an opportunity to play with the tools mentioned here.

  • Chant the mantra: Lam
  • Do a grounding meditation. There are many options on various sources like on YouTube, or apps like Insight Timer. I have a 7 minute grounding meditation which I can send you. Please email me here to request it.
  • Walk in nature. Going for a nature walk  is grounding. It gets you back into your body and out of your mind.
  • Do some yoga postures for the root chakra like: forward bend and mountain pose. See this article for an illustration of the yoga poses.
  • Hug a tree. Trees are rooted in the earth and very grounding. If you feel silly hugging a tree you can lean your back on it. I used to sit in my backyard reading or drawing with my back against a tree. It’s very soothing and grounding.
  • Dance. Dancing is another activity that gets you back into your body if your thoughts are going wild. Stomping your feet is grounding.
  • Put your feet on the ground. Depending on where you live you may be able to walk barefoot on the ground. This is called earthing or grounding. Just make sure wherever you walk is free of any debris that may hurt you.
  • Use crystals: tiger’s eye, black tourmaline, smoky quartz, and obsidian. These crystals are all grounding crystals. You can carry them with you or meditate with them.
You can also wear them in your jewelry like earrings, pendants, bracelets or rings.
  • Take a bath. Taking a bath with epsom salts or himalayan salts is grounding and soothing.
  • Wear the colour red. You can wear the colour red or have it in your home where you can easily see it.
  • Use solfeggio frequencies. These frequencies are said to vibrate at the same rate as the chakra and to realign them. The frequency for the root chakra is: 396 Hz. Here is a video on YouTube for the root chakra solfeggio frequency.
  • Use affirmations. Create your own or use one of these affirmations:
    • It’s safe for me to be me.
    • I am safe and secure.
    • I am at peace with every being around me.
    • I am grounded by mother earth.

The Chakra System

Chakras

I’m dedicating Monday posts to energy healing. I thought starting with the chakra system would be a good idea, especially for those who aren’t familiar with the chakras.

First of all, what is a chakra? Chakras are energy centers within the body that are connected to specific organs and nerve bundles. If you have stagnation in any of your chakras you might experience some physical or emotional symptoms related to that chakra. Our bodies have physical and energetic components that work together.  Without both the body isn’t in balance.

Energy flows through our body through channels (also called meridians). Think of the energy channels as your energetic veins. Like blood flows through your body, energy must also flow through your body. Chakras are the gathering points for those channels. Chakras are also said to be associated with areas of your life. This can be explained by how we connect certain feelings to organs or areas of our body. The common phrase: “I knew it in my gut” is an example. Does our gut really know things? I could totally go off on a tangent about this topic. But let me stop here before I get off track as we’ll be breaking down the exact meanings of each chakra in upcoming posts.

Chakras can be balanced, overactive or underactive. In each case general behaviours can be seen depending on what state the chakra is in. As always there are exceptions to this because each person is unique. More details coming as we talk about each of the chakras.  If you have any questions please email me or contact me through my social media channels.

Free Thought Friday: Doing nothing

Source

Some days we just need a breather. The pressures of daily life are vast and plentiful. But always allow yourself some time to do nothing. Even if you have a deadline at work and you’re stressed, taking a short break like a nap or a walk outside can re-energize you to get your task done. If you google “doing nothing” you’ll see lots of articles on how doing nothing can help you at times. Doing nothing allows you to de-stress and prevent adrenal fatigue. Chronic stress can take a toll on your health and result in “anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain, high blood pressure and a weakened immune system.” It can also contribute to the development of major illnesses. So next time you feel guilty for doing nothing, remember that everyone needs chill out time. Think of it like this: you’re actually taking care of your health when you take time to relax.
