Colour: Yellow

Location: 2-3 inches above your belly button

Mantra: Ram

Relates to: Inner Strength, Self-Esteem, Responsibility, Work

Today we’re talking about the solar plexus chakra. The third chakra in the chakra system is about your inner strength, self-esteem, responsibility, and work. Physically, the solar plexus chakra is related to the stomach, kidneys, liver, and adrenal glands.

Underactive = lacking in energy
Overactive = has too much energy

If your solar plexus chakra is underactive then you may have low self-esteem, be in a victim mindset, look for approval from others, procrastinate, be irresponsible, and have a lack of ambition.  If your solar plexus chakra is overactive you may be judgemental, controlling, stubborn, critical, and bullying.

Someone with a balanced solar plexus chakra has respect for themselves and others, is confident, responsible, outgoing, independent, calm, and acts with integrity. With a balanced solar plexus chakra you use your power to affect the world in a good way, are assertive and don’t need validation from others all the time.

If you want to heal your solar plexus chakra here are some ways to do so. Pick whatever resonates with you. If you’re not sure that you like it, try it and see if you do. Move on to the next thing if it doesn’t work for you.

  • Chant the mantra: Ram
  • Step out of your comfort zone. Try something different like changing your routines. Walk a different way home. Or learn something you’d never thought of. I never thought I’d be able to run a charity fundraiser. But with a team of people I was able to hold a successful one before covid hit.
  • Do some yoga postures for the solar plexus chakra like: boat pose, and reverse plank. Yogi Approved has an illustration of these poses here.
  • Be decisive. If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t make a move without getting advice from others, practice self-reliance. To do this you can make some decisions on your own without seeking advice. Do this within reason. Obviously you may want advice for things like where to put your investments. But don’t be swayed only by what the experts say. Let your own sense of what’s important to you also make the decision.
  • Do a solar plexus chakra  meditation. The solfeggio frequency for the solar plexus chakra is 528 Hz. Here is a meditation you can try from YouTube. There are many solfeggio meditations online for free. So just find one that appeals to you and try it out.
  • Use crystals:  Citrine, tiger’s eye, yellow calcite, and yellow tourmaline are all crystals good for the solar plexus chakra. You can carry them with you, wear them in jewelry, or meditate with them.
  • Speak up. If you have something to say, don’t hold it in for fear of others reactions. Remember, you can’t control how people react. They choose how to react to what you say. In a group setting like a work meeting, speak up if you have ideas, questions or comments.
  • Practice self-care. Self-care ranges from physical, spiritual, emotional and intellectual. We’ll list some examples of each. Physical self-care can consist of: eating healthy, doing exercise or movement, getting a massage or doing self-massage. Spiritual self-care: meditation, noticing the beautiful things in life. Emotional self-care: If you don’t feel like doing something respect that and say no. Or make a conditional offer like: “I can do this at this time but not right now. Does that work for you?” Intellectual self-care: Learn new things that you’re interested in no matter what anyone says. As long as you aren’t hurting any being or the environment.
  • Use affirmations. Create your own or use one of these affirmations:
    • I trust my intuition and follow its guidance.
    • I am confident and powerful.
    • The only approval I need is my own.
    • What I offer the world is valuable.
  • Wear the colour yellow or have it around you in your home where you can see it easily.

The Sacral Chakra

Colour: Orange

Location: Pelvic area, a couple of inches below your belly button

Mantra: Vam

Relates to: Money, Relationships,  Sexuality, Intimacy, Creativity

Today we’re talking about the sacral chakra (also called the sex chakra because of the proximity to the genitals). The second chakra in the chakra system is about creativity, money, relationships, sexuality and intimacy. Once your foundational needs are met in the root chakra the next question is often: what do I want to create? How do I want to feel? Going back to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the sacral chakra is level three. See picture below.

Underactive = lacking in energy
Overactive = has too much energy

If your sacral chakra is underactive then you may feel negative emotions, sluggish, lost, creatively blocked, afraid to interact, and overly concerned about what others think of you.  If your sacral chakra is overactive you may behave manipulatively, aggressively, show lack of emotional stability and be addicted to things that give you pleasure.

Someone with a balanced sacral chakra is friendly, passionate, playful, energetic, embraces change, and expresses themselves sexually in a healthy way.

If you want to heal your sacral chakra here are some ways to do so. Pick whatever you’re drawn to. If you’re not sure that you’ll like it, be open to trying it and see if you do. Move on to the next thing if it doesn’t work for you.

  • Chant the mantra: Vam
  • Release your emotions in a safe place. If you feel like crying do so. Scream, jump up and down. I once heard an author say: Get a plastic or sponge bat and beat the heck out of a pillow. Do whatever your body and emotions are aching to do but you never gave yourself permission to do so before. As long as you don’t hurt any being this is a safe way to release your emotions.
  • Do some yoga postures for the sacral chakra like: hip openers, and cat cow. Brett Larkin’s website shows how to do these yoga positions.
  • Explore your sexuality. Whether or not you have a partner there are ways to explore your sexuality. Read books on what you’re curious about. Learning to harness your tantric energy doesn’t have to involve sex. If you have a partner ask them if you can try something different when in bed. If you’re single, do something that makes you feel sexy. Put on some music, light some candles, and dance in a sensual way. This is all about expressing your sensuality and sexuality.
  • Do something creative like writing, drawing, painting, singing, etc. You know how kids play with making art in school? Come to this with the same attitude of playtime and don’t expect perfection right away. Your skills will come in time if you choose to practice them.
  • Do a sacral chakra meditation. There are many options on various sources like on YouTube, or apps like Insight Timer. Brett Larkin also has a sacral chakra meditation on YouTube.
  • Use crystals: carnelian, tiger’s eye, orange calcite, sunstone, amber, and tangerine quartz. You can carry them with you or meditate with them. You can also get jewelry with these crystals.
  • Take care of your body. Most of us are pretty rough with our bodies. Sometimes we don’t get enough rest, eat well or give it breaks like a walk in fresh air. What can you do to take care of yourself? Take a nap, give yourself an oil massage, stretch out your body if its tight, these are just some ideas.
  • Wear the colour orange or have it around you in your home. Some place where you can see it easily.
  • Look at your addictions. Are you addicted to sweet foods? Sex? Gambling? Alcohol? Take time to look at these addictions deeply. What is at the root of them? Are they filling in for something that you feel is lacking? You can journal about this, talk to a friend, a therapist or family member that you trust.
  • Use affirmations. Create your own or use one of these affirmations:
    • I allow myself to feel my emotions.
    • I am a passionate person.
    • I take care of and respect my body.
    • I have healthy boundaries.

The Root Chakra

Colour: Red

Location: Base of Spine

Mantra: Lam

Relates to: Survival, Security, Safety, Belonging

Continuing with our discussion on the chakra system, today we’ll be talking about the root chakra. As the first chakra in the chakra system, the root chakra is our foundation. If you think of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the root chakra would be the first two levels. I find it interesting that most diagrams of the hierarchy of needs actually follow the colours of the chakra system. See picturebelow.

Underactive = lacking in energy
Overactive = has too much energy

If your root chakra is underactive then you may feel unloved, mistrustful, disconnected from the world, anxious, ungrounded, indecisive, have a negative mindset, and is overly concerned with what others think of you. If your root chakra is overactive you may act bossy, controlling, domineering, egotistic, greedy, materialistic, impulsive and have workaholic tendencies.

Someone with a balanced root chakra is grounded, trusting, independent, feels secure and at peace with their life. If you’re empathic you may sense that they are trust worthy, steady, solid, and reliable.

If you want to heal your root chakra here are some ways to do so. Pick whatever resonates with you. If you’re not sure that you like it, experiment and see if you do. Take this as an opportunity to play with the tools mentioned here.

  • Chant the mantra: Lam
  • Do a grounding meditation. There are many options on various sources like on YouTube, or apps like Insight Timer. I have a 7 minute grounding meditation which I can send you. Please email me here to request it.
  • Walk in nature. Going for a nature walk  is grounding. It gets you back into your body and out of your mind.
  • Do some yoga postures for the root chakra like: forward bend and mountain pose. See this article for an illustration of the yoga poses.
  • Hug a tree. Trees are rooted in the earth and very grounding. If you feel silly hugging a tree you can lean your back on it. I used to sit in my backyard reading or drawing with my back against a tree. It’s very soothing and grounding.
  • Dance. Dancing is another activity that gets you back into your body if your thoughts are going wild. Stomping your feet is grounding.
  • Put your feet on the ground. Depending on where you live you may be able to walk barefoot on the ground. This is called earthing or grounding. Just make sure wherever you walk is free of any debris that may hurt you.
  • Use crystals: tiger’s eye, black tourmaline, smoky quartz, and obsidian. These crystals are all grounding crystals. You can carry them with you or meditate with them.
You can also wear them in your jewelry like earrings, pendants, bracelets or rings.
  • Take a bath. Taking a bath with epsom salts or himalayan salts is grounding and soothing.
  • Wear the colour red. You can wear the colour red or have it in your home where you can easily see it.
  • Use solfeggio frequencies. These frequencies are said to vibrate at the same rate as the chakra and to realign them. The frequency for the root chakra is: 396 Hz. Here is a video on YouTube for the root chakra solfeggio frequency.
  • Use affirmations. Create your own or use one of these affirmations:
    • It’s safe for me to be me.
    • I am safe and secure.
    • I am at peace with every being around me.
    • I am grounded by mother earth.

The Chakra System

Chakras

I’m dedicating Monday posts to energy healing. I thought starting with the chakra system would be a good idea, especially for those who aren’t familiar with the chakras.

First of all, what is a chakra? Chakras are energy centers within the body that are connected to specific organs and nerve bundles. If you have stagnation in any of your chakras you might experience some physical or emotional symptoms related to that chakra. Our bodies have physical and energetic components that work together.  Without both the body isn’t in balance.

Energy flows through our body through channels (also called meridians). Think of the energy channels as your energetic veins. Like blood flows through your body, energy must also flow through your body. Chakras are the gathering points for those channels. Chakras are also said to be associated with areas of your life. This can be explained by how we connect certain feelings to organs or areas of our body. The common phrase: “I knew it in my gut” is an example. Does our gut really know things? I could totally go off on a tangent about this topic. But let me stop here before I get off track as we’ll be breaking down the exact meanings of each chakra in upcoming posts.

Chakras can be balanced, overactive or underactive. In each case general behaviours can be seen depending on what state the chakra is in. As always there are exceptions to this because each person is unique. More details coming as we talk about each of the chakras.  If you have any questions please email me or contact me through my social media channels.
